Maintenance & Safety Manager
The Salt Spring Centre of Yoga, now in its 30th year, is the longest-running spiritual retreat centre on Canada’s west coast and is known for the excellence of its programs, delicious vegetarian cuisine and its productive organic farm.
The Centre has an opening for a Maintenance & Safety Manager. This position reports to the Operations Manager and is responsible for attending to the day-to-day physical upkeep and safety of indoor and outdoor equipment, systems and buildings. The Maintenance & Safety Manager also trains, schedules and supervises volunteer staff assigned to maintenance in an effective, supportive manner.
Applicants must be legally able to work in Canada and should have some knowledge of and experience with carpentry, generators, appliance and small engine repair, pressure washing, painting, plumbing and water systems, standard practices and tools used in maintenance and repair of building facilities, and safety practices but is not expected to be expert in these areas. Part of the job is knowing when to call in an expert. Applicants should have effective communication skills and be able to follow oral and/or written instructions, communicate well in both oral and written form, maintain organized work areas, and establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with all those contacted in the course of work assignments, including volunteer staff and program participants. Possession of a driver’s license valid in BC is also required.
This position receives a monthly stipend of $400 for the first year, as well as room and board (delicious organic vegetarian meals), and a variety of classes including meditation, asana, and philosophy. The work week is 40 hours, plus time for community meetings. This position could start immediately or by arrangement. This could be a year round position, but we will also consider those willing to make a full season commitment from March 1 – November 30, 2012.
