Karma Yoga Service & Study- How to Apply

Karma Yoga Service

Please review the following information before proceeding to our online application form.

Commitment

A commitment for the full duration of your chosen term is required to meet our staffing needs. The Centre functions most effectively if all staff and volunteers are whole-hearted and cooperative in their efforts, and arrive on time for all their work shifts. As we are a yoga centre certain standards of behaviour are expected of residents. Please read our Centre Guidelines.

We have many requests for people to stay longer after their KYSS term has ended. This may be possible and requires a formal application for an extension. Approval will depend on how your skills and temperament fit the Centre’s needs at that time.

Non-BC Residents

If you are a non-BC resident, you are required to make your own arrangements for health insurance, for the full duration of your stay with us.(NOTE: Canadian residents moving to BC from other provinces are insured for three months only by their home province. If they are staying in BC longer than three months, they must take steps to acquire proper health insurance through BC Medical.) The Centre is not liable if you are in need of medical attention and do not carry proper health insurance.

Volunteers from the US need a work permit for volunteering in Canada. Permits are available at the border. Volunteers will also need a letter from SSCY to present at the border, stating the dates of their stay, and an outline of what they will be doing.

Accommodations

Indoor housing is available for participants in the spring (March – May) and fall months (September – November). Most of the KY rooms are cozy, private rooms. We have one room with twin beds, and another that has a single bed plus a loft with a bed. NOTE: Due to the size of the rooms and storage space, please do not bring an excess of clothing or personal items unless you have a car to store your belongings in during your stay.

Our summer season (June – August) is a tenting session, allowing for a greater number to attend.

What To Bring

Please bring the following with you: appropriate clothes for indoor and outdoor work and asana class, a journal, toiletries, alarm clock, book to read, swimsuit, rain gear, hat, flashlight or headlamp, indoor shoes or slippers, yoga mat if possible, as well as outdoor shoes that you can slip off easily. Bed linens, blankets and a towel are supplied for in-house accommodation.

Laundry facilities are provided and the cost is included in your monthly fee.

Please do not bring the following: non-prescription drugs, cigarettes, alcohol, pets, or non-vegetarian food.

Due to fire danger, we do not allow incense, candles, kerosene lamps, or anything with a flame in our housing or campgrounds.
