Contraindications to Swedana

Swedana is a highly effective Ayurvedic treatment for detoxifying the body. However, as it is demanding on the body, there are several health conditions which are not compatible with this form of treatment. If any of the following situations apply to you, we are unable to provide you with a swedana treatment. Please phone the office or email us at yoga@saltspringcentre.com if you have any questions:

  • Menstruation, first three days
  • Eating within last 2 hours
  • Pregnancy
  • Obesity
  • Frail physical condition (related to advanced age or low body weight)
  • Cancer for which you are currently receiving treatment
  • Fulminating cancer
  • Inflammatory conditions, including skin rashes and arthritis
  • Active infection, including skin rashes
  • Gout
  • Active herpesvirus infection (including Epstein Barr/HHV-4)
  • Diabetes, advanced or uncontrolled
  • Heart disease, including high blood pressure, angina, valvular disease, congestive heart failure, vascular disease, etc.
  • Lung disease, active infections (pneumonia, tuberculosis, etc.), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, difficulty breathing
  • Liver disease, including jaundice, cirrhosis, or hepatitis
  • Diarrhea, rectal inflammation
  • Active bleeding on or in any part of the body
  • Severe fearfulness, anger, anxiety, depression
  • History of migraines
  • Any serious health condition (let your practitioner know)
