Yoga Service & Study Immersion – How to Apply

Karma Yoga Service

In re-evaluating our offerings this year, we have decided to put YSSI on hold. Please check back in 2018. Thank you!

Thank you for your interest in spending time with the Salt Spring Centre of Yoga community, and in participating in the Yoga, Service and Study Immersion (YSSI) program.

In this twelve-week program, participants enter the stream of our daily life and are invited to involve themselves in the ongoing activities of a community with the spiritual aims of Yoga, meditation and service.

A non-refundable application fee of 31.50 is required at the time of application. We select the most appropriate candidates for interviews via Skype which are usually held 2 months prior to the start of a session. You may email us at to see if we still have openings before sending your application.

Because delayed arrivals and early departures detract from our ability to orient new participants and schedule service hours, we ask that all participants commit to completing the entire program; arriving on the first day and departing on the final day. For shorter stays, participants can arrange a Personal Retreat with service options through the office, which can be contacted via e-mail at

The YSSI program involves a commitment to three main components of the program; approximately 20 hours of volunteer service in a variety of areas, 3 hours in weekly community meetings, and 6 hours of instruction in yoga philosophy, pranayama, and meditation.

A commitment for the full duration of the term is required to meet our staffing needs. The Centre functions most effectively if all staff and volunteers are whole-hearted and cooperative in their efforts, and arrive on time for all their work shifts. As we are a yoga centre certain standards of behaviour are expected of residents.

Please ensure you have read the YSSI program information for detailed information about what to expect, including program details and a sample daily schedule.

Please read our Centre Guidelines for more information about what to expect at the Centre.

Non-BC Residents

If you are a non-BC resident, you are required to make your own arrangements for health insurance, for the full duration of your stay with us. (NOTE: Canadian residents moving to BC from other provinces are insured for only three months by their home province. If they are staying in BC longer than three months, they must take steps to acquire proper health insurance through BC Medical.) The Centre is not liable if you are in need of medical attention and do not carry proper health insurance.

Volunteers from the US may need a work permit for volunteering in Canada. Permits are available at the border. Volunteers will also need a letter from SSCY to present at the border, stating the dates of their stay, and an outline of what they will be doing. We will send this to you upon your acceptance to the YSSI program.

All YSSI program participants camp in tents for the duration of the program period.  Our campsites are equipped with tent platforms and tarps, several outhouses and forest showers.  The campsite is situated in a rainforest so expect some rain during the season.  Please bring your own tent and bedding. We may be able to provide tents for those who do not have them.
