In this class, students will explore limbs 3-8 of the aṣhṭāṅga-yoga, as laid out in the second and third books of the Yoga-Sūtra. Using Patañjali’s sūtras as a basis, students will first review these limbs in the context of the overall aim of the Yoga-Sūtra. Then students will explore these limbs as a progressive movement from gross to subtle in the overall process of purifying and calming the mind, starting with the gross, physical body in āsana, then the energetic or “prāṇic” body in prāṇāyāma, then the senses in pratyahāra, and finally the thinking mind in dhāraṇā, dhyāna, and samādhi. Time will be taken for discussion, questions, and sharing of experience in practice, as well.
