This class begins with a brief introduction to the history and format of the Yoga-Sūtra, and of sūtra-based texts and their commentaries in general. Then, the class will return to the concepts of duḥkha and kleśha introduced in “The Call to Yoga,” and their root in avidyā, or ignorance, of one’s true nature. Fundamental concepts of the Sāṅkhya philosophy used in the Yoga-Sūtra will be introduced to clarify avidyā further, particularly as the act of mistaking aspects of prakṛiti, or the contents and instruments of experience, for puruṣha, the purely conscious witness. Then, students will explore the opening four sūtras of the text and see how the practice of meditation serves as a remedy for avidyā and the suffering that results from it. Finally, after acknowledging the challenges and pitfalls of meditation practice, the class will give a general overview of the many practices given to overcome these obstacles and make the quieting of the mind possible.
