Yama and Niyama, the first two limbs of Ashtanga Yoga, are the ethical foundation of Yoga. Yama means ‘self restraints’, and Niyama means ‘observances.’ They are not rules in the sense of ‘thou shalts’ or ‘thou shalt nots’, but rather guidelines for living in a way that supports the development of positive qualities and peace. We will review each of the yamas and niyamas and discuss how they can support us in our quest for peace.
