This class begins with a guided reflection that invites participants to consider what led them to spiritual practice in general and Salt Spring Centre of Yoga specifically. Participants are then invited to share their stories in small groups, after which they can share with the large group as well. The themes and concepts that emerge are in turn considered in light of the Sanskrit terms duḥkha, or suffering, and kleśha, or affliction, particularly as they appear in the Yoga-Sūtra. Readings from the writings of Bābā Hari Dāss and other spiritual teachers, along with examples from everyday life, will be presented to help students further understand these concepts. The class concludes with the teacher offering a general framework by which to understand yoga as a remedy to the avidyā, or ignorance, that incompletely defines us as separate, limited egos. There will also be an invitation to practice svādhyāya, self- and scriptural-study, in the coming theory classes, and to bring one’s own assumptions about what yoga is into conversation with classical texts and teachings.
