June at the Centre: The Land Grows Abundant
There is a moment every summer when the land stops promising and begins to give. June was that moment this year: warm days, a garden in full bloom, and a ripeness that asked to be shared. It was also a month of generosity, in more than one sense.
From the Farm
The Centre can now be found at the Tuesday Farmers Market on Salt Spring Island. Lettuce, cherries, turnips, beets, and whatever the land has ripened and offered to be received make their way to our table, changing each week with the rhythm of the harvest. If you are on the island on a Tuesday, please come and find us, and bring something home with you.
Behind the scenes, the garden has been blooming in earnest, and the orchard is heavy with fruit. Between warm weather and rain arriving at the right moments, it has been a season of genuine abundance, the kind that is easy to overlook until one is standing in the middle of it.
A Gift That Keeps the Trees Alive
We extend a heartfelt thank you to Nigel, who installed an irrigation system for our nut trees along the barn. It was a generous and thoughtful offer, and it is now keeping both the trees and the medicinal plants beside them alive through the dry summer months. Gifts such as this one, quiet and practical, are part of what allows this land to thrive. We are deeply grateful.
New Growth: Woolly Sunflowers
Among this season’s new plantings are woolly sunflowers, an indigenous species belonging to the Asteraceae family, now taking root on the land. It is a small addition with deep roots, both literally and in keeping with the Centre’s ongoing commitment to native and medicinal plantings.
