The Growing Season Has Begun
Muscles and veggies are growing stronger every day on the farm. With the arrival of a willing and eager group of Karma Yogis, we’ve been digging, raking, planting, weeding and more digging!
We’ve planted new apple trees in the orchard, our compost piles are flipped and getting nice and toasty, and we had the first harvest of arugula, mizuna, spinach, and komatsuna from one of our greenhouses! The warming weather has given the fields a chance to dry out just enough for tilling, and we’ve been out in the misty weather transplanting our leafy brassicas, like kale, cabbage and mustards, and our heading brassicas – cauliflower and broccoli. We’ve got some exciting varieties in store: purple and orange cauliflower and romanesco broccoli!
With the sunny days we’ve been having it’s hard to remember that only a month ago raging winds were blowing through the farm. We awoke one morning to a very precarious leaning greenhouse, threatening to fall over on top of our crop. Thank-you so much to Greg Bates of the centre’s Satsang community who helped us gracefully pull the greenhouse back to standing. Our crop is safe, and the first carrots are going straight to Greg!
If you’d like to keep up to date with produce that we will offer at our farm stand, sign up to our mailing list here. When we open the stand, you’ll receive an email about once a week telling you what kinds of farm delights you’ll find in the blue hut at the edge of our driveway at 355 Blackburn Road.
